HANDS ON SKINCARE

Founder - Jackie Lake

Jackie has had a holistic therapy practice for over 18 years.  She has always been passionate about making her own organic massage balms and oils for her client sessions. The smooth glide, the many layered aromas and the mind/body/spirit effects of each blend has enhanced her bodywork practice. She now produces a wide range of certified aromatherapy skincare and home sensory products using these signature blends which have been perfected over the years.

Having suffered with eczema, psoriasis and dry skin for many years, especially after going through harsh cancer treatment, Jackie understands how important natural, fresh and organic formulations are to skin and body health.

Jackie has her workshop here at the Hands On Retreat where all of the Hands On Skincare range are made by hand from scratch.  She believes in using fresh, high quality, ethically sourced, natural, organic ingredients. See the Hands On Skincare ethics statement below for details.

Most of all, they smell and feel great.

HANDS ON SKINCARE ETHICS

Handmade

Hands On Skincare home and body care products are handmade from scratch, in small batches using fresh ingredients.  The home spa accessories available have been hand picked with their environmental and ethical impact in mind.

Organic and natural ingredients

There are some amazing organic ingredients available in the UK. Hands On Skincare products contain quality organic ingredients where possible, but are rarely 100% organic.  Some ingredients such as wild botanicals, tree resins, salts, clays and vitamins cannot be classified as organic, but are natural ingredients.  Natural, minimally processed ingredients offer the best long term benefits for the body and the environment.

No artificial colours, fragrances, silicones or parabens are used.

Preservative free

Hands On Skincare body care products are anhydrous i.e. oil and butter rich, without the addition of water and emulsifiers, therefore do not need the addition of artificial preservatives, which can irritate sensitive skin.  Rosemary extract is added to recipes to naturally extend the freshness of the products.

Palm oil free

No palm oil or palm oil derivatives are used due to the potential damage to fragile eco-systems by palm oil  agriculture. There are very few suppliers of palm oil that are consistently able 100% to confirm the origin of their oils, therefore Hands On Skincare formulations contain alternative oils.

Fair trade shea butter

The raw shea butter used in our products is traditionally hand pressed by women in the Akoma cooperative in Ghana.  The purchase of this wonder product helps sustain village life and supports the women and children of the community who live off of the profits of their shea butter production.

Supporting organic beekeeping

Organic beekeeping is the process of raising bees without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other unnatural or harmful substances. In order for beekeeping to fit the definition of organic, the bees have to be raised using all-natural materials and methods, with care taken to support bee health and low stress levels. Using organic beeswax products supports the expansion of healthy bee populations and encourages organic land management practices.

The Organic Beeswax used in our products is commercially filtered to ensure it's quality for skincare, but is otherwise an unprocessed raw material.

Cruelty free / not tested on animals

Cosmetic products sold in the UK and Europe are not tested on animals by law.  The UK ban on animal testing of cosmetic products came into effect in 1997.  Hands On Skincare body care products are made from ingredients that have a well-established safety record. Since the safety of the finished product can be assessed based on the safety of its ingredients, there is no need to test finished products on animals.

Cosmetic safety assessments

It is important to us at Hands On Skincare that our customers have confidence in the safety of our products.  There is also a legal and moral obligation to produce safe products.  Therefore all of our body care formulations and their ingredients have undergone a safety assessment by a professional assessor.

Packaging

Hands On Skincare uses recyclable glass jars, bottles and aluminium lids.  We use paper product labels and stickers.  Paper, cotton and other biodegradable packaging and postal materials are used where possible. Non recyclable pumps, spray heads and pipettes can be reused by purchasing refill versions of our products which have recyclable metal caps. Our containers are also ideal for reuse at home for other purposes.
